Exploring the braided rivers of Switzerland: landscape photography in Ferpècle

Located in the beautiful Valais region of Switzerland, the braided rivers of Ferpècle provide a stunning landscape perfect for drone photography. Flowing from the Mont Miné Glacier, these unique rivers form a captivating network of channels across the valley. In this article, I’ll share tips for using drone photography to capture the beauty of these Swiss braided rivers.

1. Braided Rivers: Stunning Patterns and Drone Photography

Braided rivers are a beautiful natural feature with winding river channels divided by small, often temporary islands called braid bars. These rivers form stunning patterns that look like a braid from above. They are perfect for drone photography. While braided rivers are often photographed in Iceland or New Zealand, you can also find them in Switzerland. This article focuses on the braided rivers in Ferpècle, a valley in Valais. From above, you can capture incredible water details and wide views that resemble the veins of the Earth.

2. Swiss Braided Rivers in the Ferpècle Valley

Braided rivers can also be found in Switzerland. Although they are smaller here, they are still stunning. You can see these rivers in Ferpècle, a picturesque valley located in the Val d’Hérens, within the Valais region. The area is easily accessible with a short hike starting from the village of Salay. To reach Ferpècle Valley, follow the well-marked trail through beautiful Alpine scenery. The hike takes about 2 hours one way.

The trail is relatively easy, but be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring water and snacks. For the best photos, visit in late spring or early summer when the glacial meltwater enhances the intricate patterns of the braided rivers.

The weather in the Alps can be unpredictable and change rapidly. Therefore, I strongly suggest checking the Swiss weather forecast app before heading out to see the expected conditions for the day. In 2024, there were significant floods in the Valais region, causing damage in some areas. To avoid any inconvenience, always double-check regional websites, such as the Val d’Hérens tourism info, to confirm that the hike is still open and safe.

3. How to photograph braided rivers with your drone

Capturing the beauty of braided rivers is best achieved from above, and a drone is an essential tool for obtaining the best aerial shots. Personally, I used a DJI Mini 3 Pro, but you can use any drone that suits your needs for photographing these specific braided rivers. In Ferpècle, you can fly your drone very close to the braided rivers without needing to be far away. Here are some tips for photographing braided rivers with your drone:

1️⃣ Check local regulations: Before flying your drone, ensure you are not in a restricted area by checking local laws and regulations.

2️⃣ Monitor wind conditions: Wind can affect drone stability. Fly only when the wind is calm to keep your shots steady and avoid drifting, as valleys can have stronger winds.

3️⃣ Scout the area: Explore the location before launching your drone to identify and avoid obstacles like trees or power lines.

4️⃣ Use anti-reflective filters: Equip your drone with anti-reflective filters to reduce glare and reflections on the water, which helps capture the true colors and patterns of the rivers.

5️⃣ Photograph on cloudy days: Cloudy days are ideal for drone photography of braided rivers because they lessen reflections and harsh shadows, providing clearer and more detailed images.

6️⃣ Consider altitude and panorama: The maximum drone flight altitude is 120 meters. For a broader view of the braided rivers, consider taking panoramic shots to cover a larger area in a single image.

4. How to find braided rivers in Switzerland

Braided rivers are not widely known in Switzerland, and there are no popular spots specifically for viewing them. They are mainly found in the Alps, as most rivers in lower Switzerland are controlled to prevent flooding.

To find the braided rivers in Ferpècle, I used Google Maps. I searched for glaciers and examined the map to see if there were any braided rivers in the area and if they were accessible by hiking.

5. The best time to photograph the braided rivers in Ferpècle

The best time to photograph the braided rivers in Valais, Switzerland, is during late spring and summer when the glacier snow is melting. The amount of water in the braided rivers can vary depending on Swiss weather conditions, whether spring is rainy or dry, and the amount of snow melting.

This hike is usually closed during winter. You can access it once the snow starts to melt, typically from mid-spring when temperatures are rising. In my opinion, this period offers the best conditions for landscape and drone photography of the stunning braided rivers, as the water levels will be at their highest.
