Terceira, the mysterious island of the Azores
4 days
Day 1: Exploring the South of Terceira
Our adventure began with a midday arrival on Terceira Island. With only half a day to explore, we quickly collected our luggage, picked up our rental car, and headed southwest to two stunning spots perfect for landscape photography: Miradouro da Cruz do Canário and Zona Balnear da Fajã do Fischer. The cloudy sky provided the perfect opportunity to experiment with long-exposure shots of the sea.
Miradouro da Cruz do Canario
One of our first stops was Miradouro da Cruz do Canário. This viewpoint offers an excellent opportunity to photograph Ilhéus das Cabras, two small islets off Terceira. Located just minutes from the capital, Angra do Heroísmo, this easily accessible spot features a nearby car park and stunning views perfect for capturing striking landscape photos.
One of my first stops was Miradouro da Cruz do Canário. This viewpoint offers a good opportunity to photograph Ilhéus das Cabras, two small islets off Terceira. Located just minutes from the capital, this easily accessible spot features a nearby car park and stunning views perfect for capturing striking landscape photos. You can simply park your car and walk to the viewpoint. This spot has absolutely no difficulties.

Zona Balnear da Fajã do Ficher (Serretinha)
A few minutes’ drive further, we visited the natural pool at Zona Balnear da Fajã do Fischer. Since it was a cloudy day, the area was empty, and we had the spot all to ourselves. I found this place to be an excellent location for landscape photography, especially in the Azores. It could also be a great spot for sunrise or sunset photography on Terceira Island.
The site offers fantastic compositional opportunities with Ilhéus das Cabras in the background. The pool and the ocean are separated by a low wall, creating a dynamic effect with calm water on one side and the agitated sea on the other, perfect for capturing dramatic long-exposure shots.

Day 2: Discovering Central Terceira
On our second day, we delved into Terceira’s breathtaking landscapes, starting with the tranquil Lagoa das Patas at dawn. We then explored the mystical Mistérios Negros Dark Forest, followed by the dramatic Algar do Carvão lava tube. The day concluded with a stunning sunset at Miradouro da Serra do Cume, capturing the island’s panoramic views.
Lagoa das Patas Lake
Lagoa das Patas is a small lagoon fed by mountain waters via Ribeira Brava, located in the center of Terceira. The forest covered in lush green moss is an excellent spot for landscape photographers. This picturesque lake is surrounded by a magical forest, perfect for capturing stunning landscape shots in the Azores. The area around the lagoon is alive with ducks and chickens, adding a lively touch to your photos if you like that element in your compositions.
All around Lagoa das Patas, you’ll see azaleas and beautiful hydrangeas, perfect for framing your shots. For a peaceful photo session, I recommend arriving early in the morning before the local crowds, especially on weekends. We heard that locals really enjoy having BBQs outdoors here. We arrived around 8 a.m. and found it to be the ideal time to photograph this moss-covered forest. The lake is also beautiful from above, so if you have a drone, it’s an excellent option for capturing aerial landscape photographs.

Mistérios Negros Dark Forest
The Mistérios Negros Dark Forest was one of my favorite hikes in the Azores and is one of Terceira’s top spots for photographing moss-covered trees. The 5 km loop trail starts just a 6-minute drive from Lagoa das Patas. If you’re into landscape photography, I highly recommend doing this hike.
The trail takes you through a forest of small, moss-covered trees, volcanic rocks, and striking red-trunked trees. As you follow the path, you’ll encounter diverse landscapes and atmospheres that you wouldn’t expect at the start of the walk. Despite light rain during my visit, this enchanted forest offered endless opportunities for capturing beautiful shots. The entire loop took around 4 hours, including stops for photography. If you’re an experienced hiker, you can complete the loop more quickly, but we really took our time to compose pictures of the ancient mossy trees. I loved them so much that I wanted to capture their essence in my photos.

Algar do Carvão
Algar do Carvão, located in central Terceira, not far from the Mistérios Negros, is one of the most iconic natural sites in the Azores. To be honest, this is one of the photos that inspired us to visit Terceira. This impressive lava tube, set inside an extinct volcano, is truly unique with its inner cathedral and fern-covered walls. In terms of landscape photography composition, it’s challenging to innovate here. The lack of light makes it difficult to capture a good shot of the inner cathedral, so I opted for the classic view of the lava tube from below, with all the ferns surrounding it.
Please note that tripods were not allowed during my visit, and opening times vary by season. Despite the challenges, the stunning views make it a must-visit location for capturing dramatic landscape shots. I’m not a big fan of crowded locations, but I really wanted to see and photograph this unique place.

Furnas do Enxofre
After visiting Algar do Carvão, we explored Furnas do Enxofre. This short loop trail features fumaroles emerging from the volcano. Despite its brevity, the site is intriguing with well-maintained paths and informative panels. It’s a great spot for capturing the volcanic activity of Terceira, making it ideal for landscape photography.
If I’m not mistaken, there is a longer hike around Furnas do Enxofre that might offer more opportunities for photography. However, we were tired and wanted to enjoy some relaxation time. After all, we were on vacation and we were planning to go the Miradouro da Serra do Cume for sunset.

Miradouro da Serra do Cume at Sunset
As the weather seemed favorable for a sunset, we drove to Miradouro da Serra do Cume for a sunset photography session. This iconic viewpoint offers panoramic views of Terceira and its famous patchwork fields, which look stunning during the golden hour and at sunset.
This location has a tendency to be foggy. We made two additional attempts during our stay in Terceira, and neither was successful. On one occasion, the fog was so dense that we couldn’t see anything, and on the second, the fog lifted too quickly and blocked the sunlight. I really loved this spot for sunset photography, so my advice is to check local webcams to see if the weather might be suitable for a sunset there. If it looks too cloudy, consider finding another photography spot on the island.

Day 3: Sunrise and Volcano Views
On day three, I captured the sunrise at Pico do Joana, an iconic volcano on Terceira Island, where golden light highlighted the lush patchwork fields. Later, I explored the dramatic lava cliffs at Miradouro de Alagoa and ended the day with a sunset at Zona Balnear do Negrito, photographing waves crashing against black lava rocks. Each spot offered unique and stunning views of the island.
Pico do Joana Volcano
On our third day, we visited Pico do Joana, an iconic volcano on Terceira, to capture a drone shot in the morning light. While I can wake up at 5:30 a.m. for work without any problem, it’s quite challenging for me to rise early during vacations. So, we opted for morning light this time.
This location is renowned for its patchwork fields and grazing cows on the volcano. The morning light adds a golden hue to the lush green fields. The best way to photograph Pico do Joana is definitely from the air, as you can fully appreciate its beauty. You will also be able to see the two islets, Ilhéus das Cabras, which can make for great additional elements in your shots. I didn’t try it, but Pico do Joana could also be a fantastic photography subject during the golden hour before sunset. It’s up to you!
View of the Patchwork Fields of Terceira from the Serra Ribeirinha
Once we captured our drone photographs of the Pico do Joana volcano, we drove to Serra Ribeirinha to take landscape photos of the patchwork fields. From this spot, you can also see Miradouro da Serra do Cume. The patchwork fields are an island classic, and they are best photographed from a higher vantage point. I had already captured them at sunset the previous evening, so I chose this spot to get a different perspective.
If you drive a bit further, you’ll find some spots along the road to photograph the two islets, Ilhéus das Cabras. Although I wasn’t entirely convinced by the light as the morning light was fading, I’m sure you can also capture stunning shots at sunrise or sunset.

Miradouro de Alagoa Lava Cliffs
I know I can’t visit all the spots early in the morning or late in the afternoon to capture the best light. Otherwise, I would need to spend weeks in every destination I visit. We also wanted to explore the northern part of Terceira. We arrived at noon at the lava cliffs of Miradouro de Alagoa. We chose this location for its stunning views and to enjoy our lunch. You can drive to the spot, although the road can be a bit bumpy.
Initially, I didn’t want to take any photographs because the light seemed too harsh. However, when I saw the powerful waves crashing against the lava cliffs, I decided to get my camera out. I asked my friend to walk down the rocks and stand between two large rocks to add a sense of scale to the scene. The contrast of the rocks, waves, and a person made for an interesting composition. In the end, I’m pleased with the photo, even though the lighting wasn’t ideal. Sometimes, it’s worth taking a shot and seeing what you can capture!

Sunset at Zona Balnear do Negrito
I had chosen Zona Balnear do Negrito as my sunset photography spot for the evening. It’s a fantastic location for capturing sunset photos, particularly with its striking black lava rocks that offer superb compositional opportunities.
Unfortunately, the sky didn’t turn red as expected, so I decided to focus on long exposure shots of the black lava rocks. While there, I also experimented with different angles and techniques. In the end, I loved how the dark tones of the lava rocks contrasted with the soft white of the water, creating a dramatic effect.

Day 4: Forest and Mountain Views
On the fourth day, we took time to explore other locations on Terceira, starting with a visit to the Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Viveiro da Falca, known for its enchanting red-trunked trees. In the afternoon, we drove to Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara, the highest viewpoint on the island. From there, we enjoyed a panoramic view and could see Mount Pico on the neighboring island, which is next on our list for landscape photography.
Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Viveiro da Falca
First, we visited the Reserva Florestal de Recreio do Viveiro da Falca, a popular picnic area in central Terceira. The forest has a similar appearance to Lagoa das Patas, with its moss-covered ground and enchanting atmosphere.
Initially, I was searching for purple hydrangeas to capture in a photograph. The Azores are known for these beautiful flowers, and I didn’t want to leave the archipelago without a proper shot. When I finally spotted some purple hydrangeas, we discovered an alley of red-trunked trees. It’s just a short walk from the car park and definitely worth seeing. This location is ideal for landscape photography and offers excellent opportunities for capturing the unique beauty of Terceira. I didn’t want to leave this place.

Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara
n the afternoon, we drove up to Miradouro da Serra de Santa Bárbara, the highest viewpoint on Terceira. The climb through a lush forest leads to stunning panoramic views of the island. As the day was clear, we were able to see Mount Pico on Pico Island, our next destination. I knew it was a great spot for sunset photography, but each evening it was covered with clouds. Therefore, we took the opportunity to visit it during midday when the weather was sunny, ensuring we could capture some beautiful landscape shots of Terceira.

Day 5: Last day in Terceira
Sunrise at Miradouro da Serra do Cume
With an early morning flight ahead, we decided to make a brief detour to Miradouro da Serra do Cume to capture the sunrise light over the patchwork fields. This was our only chance to photograph this iconic viewpoint before leaving Terceira.
Since our flight was very early, we had less than 15 minutes at the viewpoint. I managed to capture a few landscape photos of the stunning patchwork fields, and then we were back in the car, ready to head to Pico Island. This quick visit provided a perfect opportunity for sunrise photography and to make the most of Terceira’s unique scenery.

Pico, the volcanic island of the Azores
2 days
Pico Island, part of the Azores archipelago, is renowned for its striking landscapes, including Portugal’s highest peak, Mount Pico. After a brief flight from Terceira, where the majestic mountain of Pico comes into view, you’re greeted by a landscape characterized by unique vineyards surrounded by black lava stone walls. This distinctive scenery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sets the stage for an unforgettable photographic adventure. Here’s a detailed account of my 11-day exploration across Pico Island, highlighting key photography spots and experiences.
Day 5: Arrival and Exploration
Lava cliffs of Cachorro
Upon arrival, we first visited the lava cliffs of Cachorro, an awe-inspiring geological site. The stark, pitch-black lava formations against the deep blue ocean create a striking visual contrast. The cliffs showcase the volcanic activity that shaped this part of Pico, with unique rock formations created as lava flowed into the sea. For the best photographic results, aim for sunrise or sunset, when the light enhances the textures and colors of the volcanic rocks. Though our time here was brief, as we were staying in Lajes do Pico, I recommend dedicating time to fully explore and photograph this dramatic landscape.

A refreshing afternoon at Lagoa do Capitão
After checking into the hostel in Lajes do Pico, we decided to drive to Lagoa do Capitão. Located in Terra Alta, we hoped to find cooler air than at sea level. We didn’t check the forecast before driving there, so we were surprised to find the lake covered in fog.
Actually, I must admit that I was thrilled about it! The atmosphere was magical, and the fog was just thick enough to reveal only the silhouettes of the twisted trees along the shores of Lagoa do Capitão. We ended up spending nearly three hours by the lake. This unplanned visit turned out to be a highlight, offering a unique landscape photography session that was different from what we had expected.
Sunset at Lajes do Pico
After spending the afternoon at Lagoa do Capitão, we returned to Lajes do Pico for dinner. We found a restaurant with a view of the sea and the village’s iconic red windmill. This location was perfect for monitoring the sky and being ready to head out at the right time for a sunset photo session.
From Lajes do Pico, you can enjoy a view of Mount Pico, the highest peak in Portugal. That evening, although the sky was cloudy, the rays of light managed to pierce through the clouds, creating a magical light ideal for sunset photography. I aimed to capture photos of both the red windmill and Mount Pico. The pier extends quite far, offering several composition possibilities. You can also go inside the windmill if you prefer to frame only the sea and the volcano.

Day 6: Sunrise and Terra Alta Exploration
For this day, we decided to embark on a road trip through the Terra Alta, a fascinating region of the island of Pico, renowned for its volcanic lakes and breathtaking scenery. We took the road that crosses the island from east to west, a narrow lane that winds its way through spectacular scenery.
Sunrise at Lagoa do Capitão
Our morning began with a return to Lagoa do Capitão for sunrise photography. We arrived about 15 minutes before dawn, aiming to capture the first light of the day. The lake provided numerous landscape photography opportunities, with twisted trees framing Mount Pico in the background.
The early morning light created a stunning contrast between the sinuous shapes of the trees and the warm, red hues of the volcano. We also used our drone to capture some breathtaking aerial shots, as this location is ideal for drone photography.
Before heading there, it’s crucial to check the weather forecast for clear skies to fully capture the beauty of a sunrise at this spot. The area can be very cloudy and foggy, which may obscure views of Mount Pico.
➜ Car park Lagoa do Capitão
Lagoa do Paúl
Our first stop visiting the Terra Alta lakes was Lagoa do Paúl, a charming little lake tucked away at the end of a narrow road. As we arrived, the fog began to roll in, adding a mystical atmosphere to the landscape. Surrounded by lush green hills and a few grazing cows, Lagoa do Paúl feels quite isolated, giving you the sense of being at the edge of the world.
This is the only lake with a small pontoon that allows you to capture unique compositions of the lake from its surface. You can frame a distinctive tree with a twisted trunk that appears to be falling into the water, creating compelling images for landscape photography.

Lagoa do Caveiro
Next, we drove to Lagoa do Caveiro, a small lake located in an ancient crater. The lake is right next to the car park, requiring just a short walk to reach it. If the weather isn’t too foggy, you’ll get a clear view of this enchanting spot. The lake’s magical atmosphere was enhanced by the surrounding mist and the vibrant hedge of purple hydrangeas that adorned its banks. The hydrangeas added a burst of color to the lush landscape, creating a captivating contrast. The misty conditions intensified the lake’s ethereal quality, making it an excellent location for landscape photographers seeking moody and magical shots in the Azores.

Lagoa da Rosada
Continuing our journey through Terra Alta, we reached Lagoa da Rosada, located just a few minutes’ drive from Lagoa do Caveiro. Lagoa da Rosada is a teardrop-shaped lake renowned for its charm. On a clear day, it is said that you can see Mount Pico in the distance. Although we were unable to confirm this due to dense fog obscuring the lake’s view, our patience paid off as the mist gradually lifted, revealing the lake’s beauty. The experience highlighted the importance of waiting for the right conditions in landscape photography. The mist created a mysterious and atmospheric backdrop for capturing the lake’s unique features. However, the clear conditions lasted only a few minutes before the fog rolled back in. Be sure to bring a rain jacket if you visit Terra Alta!
Lagoa do Peixinho
Our last lake to photograph in Terra Alta was Lagoa do Peixinho, known for its distinctive green color. Located in a high crater, the lake took considerable time to reveal itself through the shifting fog. We waited more than half an hour to see it for just 5 seconds before the fog rolled in again. In total, we waited for at least an hour, but eventually, the fog cleared, allowing me to capture a few images.
The emerald waters of the lake, surrounded by lush green grass, created a striking visual contrast. I was pleasantly surprised by the vibrant green of both the grass and the lake’s color. The misty conditions added a magical dimension to the scene, making it a memorable location for capturing atmospheric and unique photographs. This spot is ideal for landscape photography and long exposure shots in the Azores, particularly if you enjoy capturing the ethereal beauty of foggy environments.

Sunset at Lajes do Pico
We ended our day back in Lajes do Pico, choosing to stay near our hostel after a full day of exploration in the fog. We were delighted to see the sun again and enjoy a warmer atmosphere. I was hoping for a colorful sunset, and fortunately, I got lucky.
After dinner, we headed back to the pier to wait for the sunset. I aimed to photograph the iconic red windmill, a classic symbol of Pico. Its vibrant red color provided a striking contrast against the surrounding green grass. We didn’t have to wait long before the clouds behind the windmill began to turn pink. I captured the shot I wanted, and I must say that during our trip in the Azores, Pico gifted us with some of the most beautiful light displays! This location is perfect for sunset photography and capturing stunning landscape shots with vibrant colors.

São Miguel, the emerald jewel of the Azores
4 days
São Miguel, the largest island in the Azores archipelago, is a must-visit for any landscape photography enthusiast. This island is home to some of the most iconic and picturesque spots in this region of Portugal, nestled in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean. Join me as I explore and photograph the stunning landscapes of São Miguel over a few unforgettable days.
Day 7: Arrival and Relaxation
We arrived in São Miguel in the early afternoon. After picking up our rental car, we headed straight to our hotel, Senhora da Rosa, Tradition & Nature Hotel, located near the center of Ponta Delgada.
Having traveled extensively, we spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool and in the hot pool within the pineapple greenhouse, enjoying a well-deserved break. We decided to take it easy for the day, with no major landscape photography plans. We wanted to conserve our energy for the next day’s adventures in São Miguel.
➜ Senhora da Rosa, Tradition & Nature Hotel
Day 8: Exploring the West of São Miguel
For our first full day on São Miguel, we explored the island’s western part, known for its breathtaking viewpoints.
Lagoa Pau Pique
Our first stop in the western part of São Miguel was the small Pau Pique Lake, surrounded by a crown of pine trees. This unique lake is best appreciated from the air. Trust me, from the ground, it doesn’t look as impressive.
You can park at the base of the small volcano and either hike up or launch your drone from the parking area. We decided to hike up for a closer look, but ultimately, I relied on my drone photographs. The aerial view really adds a new dimension to the Pau Pique Lake, showcasing its unique features and enhancing its visual appeal for landscape photography.
Miradouro da Boca do Inferno
Next, we visited the iconic Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, which offers breathtaking views of Sete Cidades and its twin volcanic lakes. This viewpoint is one of the most famous spots in the Azores, and we knew we couldn’t miss it. To be honest, we had tried to see it twice before, but each time, it was completely shrouded in fog. Since this location is at a higher altitude, I recommend bringing a waterproof jacket in case the weather changes suddenly. When we finally made it, the conditions were windy and wet, so we were glad to have our jackets with us.
The 2.6 km hike to the viewpoint is quite popular, so be prepared for some crowds. Despite the frequent fog, the view is absolutely worth the effort. Standing on the cliff, you get an amazing view of the craters and the lakes below. I can only imagine how magical this place must be at sunrise or sunset, though we weren’t lucky enough to experience it ourselves.

Lagoa do Canário
Close to the Boca do Inferno trailhead lies Lagoa do Canário, a striking turquoise lake uniquely shaped like the Snapchat ghost. This location is perfect for drone photography and is easily accessible from the nearby parking lot. You can launch your drone directly from the parking area, making it convenient for capturing aerial shots. If you prefer, you can also hike down to the lake, though we chose not to on this occasion. Instead, we quickly flew our drone over Lagoa do Canário right after returning from the Boca do Inferno trail, as we noticed the fog rolling back in. We only had about 5 to 10 minutes to capture the lake’s distinctive shape before it disappeared into the mist once again.
Sunset Praia dos Mosteiros
I had chosen Praia dos Mosteiros for sunset photography. All day long, I kept checking the sky and my app VIEWFINDR to see if we had a chance for a great sunset. As the conditions looked promising, we drove to Mosteiros Beach, located in the northwest of São Miguel. This location is ideal for sunset photography, offering numerous compositional options.
I recommend arriving early to find your perfect composition, as it is a popular spot for sunset and can get quite crowded. Arriving early will help you secure your photo spot!

Day 9: Discovering the South-Western Part of São Miguel
Drone Photography of Vila Franca do Campo Island
We started the day with drone photography of Vila Franca do Campo Island, known for its natural swimming pool within a collapsed crater. Though you can visit by boat, the aerial views are unmatched.

Parque Terra Nostra
We spent the rest of the morning at Parque Terra Nostra, famous for its thermal baths and beautiful gardens. With avenues of trees, ponds, and a river of yellow water, this park offers endless photographic opportunities. We ended up staying longer than planned, mesmerized by its beauty.
Alameda dos Plátanos
In the afternoon, we visited Alameda dos Plátanos, a less-known but stunning avenue of plane trees and hydrangeas. It’s a perfect spot for landscape photography, offering a serene and timeless atmosphere.

Day 10: Discovering the South-Western Part of São Miguel
On our last full day in the Azores, we focused on the central and northern parts of São Miguel, visiting three breathtaking locations.
Sunrise at Lagoa do Fogo
To start our day, we decided to witness the sunrise at Lagoa do Fogo, a stunning crater lake located in the Água de Pau stratovolcano massif, in central São Miguel.
Often shrouded in clouds, Lagoa do Fogo is a magical sight when visible. We arrived early at Miradouro do Pico da Barrosa, where only three of us awaited the sunrise. For about 30 minutes, we enjoyed the breathtaking views before the fog enveloped the lake, making it vanish from sight. I captured several stunning photos with my Nikon D810 and some aerial shots with my drone, highlighting the lake’s beautiful water color.
Lagoa do Fogo is a popular site on the island, and to manage overtourism, access by private car is restricted from June 15 to September 30, 2023. Only locals, tourist agencies, and shuttle buses are allowed. For the best experience, consider booking a local guide to visit this incredible photography spot at your convenience.

Drone photography of the Gorreana tea plantation
Gorreana, the oldest tea plantation in Europe, is a fascinating place to visit. What makes it particularly captivating is the stunning aerial views, as the tea plantations form beautiful patterns from above. During our 2023 visit, the plantation was open to the public, allowing us to explore freely while being mindful of the surroundings.

Photographing the Poço Azul Blue Lagoon
Poço Azul, a hidden gem in the forest near the quaint village of Achadinha on São Miguel Island, is a stunning natural swimming pool with crystal-clear turquoise-blue water. This beautiful lagoon reveals the rocky bottom and is one of my favorite photography spots in the Portuguese archipelago after ten days of exploring. I was captivated by the striking contrast between the vibrant blue of the water and the lush green vegetation surrounding it. The serene setting of Poço Azul makes it an ideal location for capturing stunning landscape photographs, and it’s also perfect for a refreshing swim if you’re into it!
To reach Poço Azul, follow the Poço Azul trail that begins in Achadinha and winds through a picturesque forest. The 1.3 km hike is relatively easy and typically takes about 30 minutes. On the day we visited, the weather was quite hot, which made the hike a bit more challenging, but the trail remains shaded and manageable. The lagoon is nestled in the forest, so keep in mind that the return hike is uphill. Even though the hike is easy, it can still be a great opportunity to visit a less crowded spot and spend extra time perfecting your landscape photography compositions.
