Madeira, an autonomous territory of Portugal, is located nearly 1,000 km southwest of Lisbon and about 600 km from the Moroccan coast. Renowned for landscape photography, Madeira offers a stunning array of rocky landscapes, dramatic coastlines, tropical forests, and breathtaking waterfalls.
In terms of landscape photography, the sunset at Pico do Arieiro was an absolute must-see on my list, and it did not disappoint. With a fiery red sky and a sea of fog and mist rising, it was a landscape photographer’s paradise.
Madeira is also home to enchanting waterfalls, and the Levada do Caldeirão Verde particularly caught my eye. As I was setting up my camera, the sun broke through, illuminating the lake with a brilliant emerald hue—a moment of sheer magic captured through my lens.
One of the highlights of my journey was the Fanal Forest. Fascinated by its mystical charm, I was drawn to this forest of mist time and again. The Fanal Forest, with its fog-laden atmosphere and gnarled, centuries-old laurel trees, presents endless opportunities for captivating landscape photography. Each visit felt like stepping into a dreamscape, where the ghostly trees stood majestically in the mist, offering limitless photographic compositions.
My journey concluded at the iconic viewpoint of Ponta de São Lourenço on the eastern tip of Madeira. This rocky, multicolored landscape provided epic lighting conditions, with dramatic rays breaking through the clouds, making it an unforgettable spot for photography.
In summary, Madeira offers unparalleled beauty from dawn till dusk, perfect for any landscape photography enthusiast. Magical scenes are abundant, waiting to be captured by the discerning eye of a camera. I look forward to returning to the Fanal Forest, the place that captivated me the most, and continuing to explore the photographic wonders of Madeira.
