Swedish Lapland, particularly Kiruna, is a paradise for landscape photographers, especially in winter. Located above the Arctic Circle, this remote region offers a unique and serene environment. One of the most breathtaking aspects of visiting Kiruna in winter is the continuous, soft light. With late sunrises and early sunsets, the sky remains painted in shades of pink and orange all day long, creating perfect conditions for photography. As a photographer, the light captivated me, and I found myself constantly immersed in the beauty of the horizon.
The landscape was blanketed in a thick layer of snow, transforming everything into a magical, silent world. Hiking through the snow-covered woods was an unforgettable experience—the tranquility and stillness of the sleeping nature made me feel as though I was in a winter fairy tale. The silence of Lapland is one of its most enchanting features, offering the perfect backdrop for capturing serene, snowy landscapes.
During my time in Lapland, I witnessed my first northern lights under a full moon. Although the aurora wasn’t grand in size, it lasted over an hour, allowing me to experiment with different compositions. The northern lights, combined with the moonlit snowy landscapes, were mesmerizing—each moment felt magical and full of photographic potential.
Lapland in winter offers so much for landscape photographers. From the soft snow that creates a dreamlike atmosphere to the incredible natural light during the day and the magical night sky, there is no better place to capture the untouched beauty of nature. Whether it’s the pastel-colored sky or the dancing northern lights, Lapland truly feels like a scene straight out of a fairy tale.
